The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a government-sponsored public service program in India, aimed at developing student volunteers into responsible citizens and fostering a sense of community service and social responsibility among them. It was launched in 1969 by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, and is implemented by various educational institutions across the country.
The NSS engages students in various community service activities such as tree planting, blood donation camps, literacy campaigns, health awareness programs, and rural development projects. Through these activities, NSS aims to address social issues, promote national integration, and instill values of empathy and compassion among the youth.
Participation in NSS is voluntary, and students who enroll in the program are required to dedicate a certain number of hours towards community service each year. NSS volunteers often undergo training sessions and workshops to develop their leadership skills and enhance their understanding of social issues. Overall, NSS plays a significant role in promoting social welfare, community development, and youth empowerment in India.
